2024 Fuck You, Censorship Project

This poem was challenged in schools for "hate messages" and "critical race theory"(?).

I have never seen a better case of "tell me you haven't read the book (or poem, in this case) without telling me you haven't read the book" in recent years. To assume that this poem contains hate messages is beyond ludicrous. This is easily one of the most inspiring, uplifting, and heartfelt poems I've read in recent years; it is about compassion, resilience, courage, and hope, and how we will not overcome our obstacles without these things.

They want to ban a poem that is capable of inspiring hope and change in a nation currently fraught with hate and misery. What does that say about them?

This is one of those times where the moment of live delivery at a particular moment in history far outshines the impact of the words delivered via audiobook 8 months later. I also think the effusive praise sets an expectation that few could meet.

It’s a lovely poem and I enjoyed Gorman’s delivery.

Note: Understand that outside of a 2 minute introduction by Oprah Winfrey, there is nothing further included in this 10 minute audio (or the ebook). For a commemorative work, I had hoped for a bit more substance. While the audios are somewhat reasonably priced at less than $3, it’s hubris to charge $10 for the digital or physical book versions.

A short spoken word poem performed well by the artist.

Oprah's introduction doesn't add much to the book.

The poem features a hopeful message and a few strong lines that I appreciate, but it also regurgitates settler colonial delusions (e.g., America as a benevolent nation) and generally reeks of liberal politics which I have very little patience for. It's certainly fitting for the inauguration of a US president.

We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace,
And the norms and notions of what “just is”
Isn’t always justice.

Testo che anticipa la pubblicazione da parte di Garzanti della raccolta di poesie di Amanda Gorman prevista per l'autunno. L'unica speranza è che quest'ultima venga rilasciata con il testo inglese a fronte.
