Crucial book for anyone seeking to understand the conflicts in the Balkans during the later parts of 20th century, and the resulting atrocities and war crimes such as the Srebrenica Massacre. Nuanced, comprehensive well written.

This book does a good job of showing the history of Bosnia and its people, especially in relation to the war that started in 1992. It can be at times hard to follow for the uninitiated but if you already know the region or become familiarized while reading the book it provides a clear picture of the authors view of how and why the war came about.

This is one of 4 books I bought when I purchased the war game Brotherhood and Unity which is about the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a good starting point and am looking forward to comparing the authors conclusions with others.

This is a helpful recounting of Bosnian history, including the ways in which power shifted and was shared over the centuries between the three religious affiliations and the different ethnic heritages. The last three chapters are particularly helpful to understanding the speed with which media was taken over and used to convince neighbors to turn against each other - pure propaganda that was enormously effective in causing violence and the display to the rest of the western world claiming it was a civil war "between equal sides". We know much more now and would do well to guard against the conditions that led to this tragedy.
