a 3.5 a well executed plot, except the ending was rushed a bit? the part where séverin says they fought the fallen house and won,,,, they just arrived and left, that’s all it felt like to me?!! other than that i absolutely love the characters and their chemistry,,,, really like the world build up as well. i also think if i’d taken lesser time to read i would’ve enjoyed it more

My Review: I really wanted to love this one but I have to say that it was very confusing and at times very boring. I loved the characters but the way it was written I found myself tuning out a lot of the explanations that are given. It rambled on a lot about history and puzzles and that really made this one not very enjoyable. I have heard others say that this is very close to Six of Crows and I really hope that is not true as I love that author's stories and have yet to read those.

In the end this one was just to bogged down by the elements of the story to be really great. I also thought that the magical system needed to be way simpler explained.

Gah! I wish I would’ve read this so much sooner! It’s been calling me from my shelves since the day I got it, but I kept putting it off. I felt so immersed in this world. The characters were so rich and had so much depth. You just felt that there was an iceberg of backstory to each of these characters that you wanted to crash into! Can this be the next big YA book to screen adaptation?! I want to see this world come to life on screen.

A stunningly written book, some beautiful lines and lyrical prose. Roshani Chokshi is a very accomplished writer.
The characters are all unique, well-developed and have varying, interesting relationships with each other. There is a beautiful found family element with all our characters which really pulls at the heart strings. Each character has a perceived flaw or is different in some way from the norm -by race or religion or the way they think etc- they are not welcome in the wider world but together create a family and have the skills to take what they want.
The plot is full of puzzles, intrigue and danger. The chapters are quite short, especially towards the end, created a good pace and sense of urgency leading up to the ending.
A well written story in all cases. Personally I just didn't connect to these characters as I have with other large cast found families -e.g Six of Crows- and I also had certain romances I was pulling for that did not come to fruition, in this installment anyway. The biggest issue for me is that I saw the big shock emotional punch moment coming, I thought it was obvious in the characterisation and writing -chapter POVs- what would happen and to whom.
Another issue I had was the fantasy elements, I don't usually have a problem with soft magic systems but I found the Forging in this book hard to follow. It is never really explained but more than that when we are in character POVs who can forge it is actually hardly mentioned past the beginning and briefly in tense scenes, to the point that I forget there even is magic that people can perform and not just objects that are forged- which is often mentioned- so I feel like this could have been integrated better into the narrative.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and think it is a solid fantasy with fun mystery/puzzle elements.
