King Arthur is not in much of this book. It's very focused on war and I found myself zoning out at times but there are parts that I was very hooked. I'm interested in reading the next installment.

4.5 rounded up
This book blew me away. I was completely unfamiliar with the Arthurian legend going into this, and so had no expectations. Cornwell captured the world of ancient Britain in such vivid and gruesome detail and it was both fascinating and extremely enjoyable.
The book suffers slightly at the very beginning, with lots of long paragraphs with only light dialogue. Though the start was somewhat slow, the narrative quickly gained steam and continued at a good place without filler. The chapters were very long and few, which at times made progress feel slow. This problem was fixed in the second part of the book, however.
I enjoyed his spin on the classic characters such as Lancelot, Arthur, and especially Nimue and Merlin. I loved seeing the true narrative and events being recounted by the main character Derfel Cadarn, contrasted with what a modern reader might know of the story.
Overall, I loved it. Thought it was a great read, and I look forward to reading the next two books.

I really like this version of Arthur! Wounded to my core, however, by the depiction of Lancelot - "he's my boy" as John Steinbeck once said.
Definitely left off on an undecided note, I will have to read the next in the series before I'll know if I like it.
