A very slow delicious reread. My friend who originally recommended the series to me highly recommended the audiobooks as well, and I am SO glad I finally tried them. Davina Porter is absolutely exquisite.

I've watched the TV show and read the books through A Breath of Snow and Ashes, but this was my first time rereading, and I absolutely loved revisiting the story, how Jamie and Claire started out and forged their relationship, plus all the small hints Diana drops about all of the events to come.

This would be 5 stars if it weren't for the undertones of
homophobia
and lil whiffs of
racism
here and there. Like I get that Black Jack Randall is a
villain
but did he really have to be an
Evil Gay
to trauma bond Claire and Jamie? Idk, I know this book isn't fresh as a daisy but I just can't find it in myself to give five stars and excuse a book because of "the time it was written in" and "historical accuracy". You do you, but my lil queer heart just can't do it at the moment. I watched the TV series before this and felt it there too, just in case anyone is wondering, though I doubt a lot of people are reading the book before watching the series at this point.

Mystery, love, fairly accurate historical details and events, and of course time travel, this book basically has it all. Though possibly harder to avoid spoilers since this book is old and there’s a series out now this is still a very fun read. Plus this is only the first of many books so one will not be left wanting more. It is especially refreshing to read about time periods so often retold through the male perspective from a female point of view, and an extremely capable one at that.
