I did not pick up this book expecting to be swept away by the gorgeous writing. I did not expect to be holding my breath through the last chapter, loving these characters so well. I also didn't expect interesting, nuanced religious commentary. In fact, I got very little of what I expected from this book and I loved that. It was interesting and beautiful and exciting. Highly recommend to people who don't know if westerns are for them.

gripping at times but those moments were too few and far between. too many overwritten landscape descriptions. heroine was also insufferable. not reading sequel

It could be due to when the book was originally written but I just found it so boring.I gave up after 55 pages and I was lucky to make it that far because sometimes I was struggling to keep my eyes open.

It's not often I'm truly disappointed in a book, but Riders of the Purple Sage was a pretty bad book. It is an outdated, corny, underdeveloped, old-fashioned, and frankly pointless book that I was quite frankly mad at having to finish. If this is Zane Gray's most highly acclaimed book then count me out for any more. I think I need to pick up Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove and re-read it just to purge my literary palette. I've got some other Westerns on my to-read list at the moment, please let them be better than Riders of the Purple Sage!
