Still processing this one. But wow. Sup deep and meaningful until the end, where it blows you out of the water and into the psyche ward.

I really liked this book because it was different from anything else I have ever read. Zusak has a talent for telling a story in a unique way. I fell in love with the characters and enjoyed the warm fuzzies in this book as well as the nail-biting suspense. The only moment that fell a little short was the ending, but I also understand why he ended it the way he did.

3.5 stars for I Am the Messenger. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this book. I'll try and post more of an actual review in a day or two.

Loved it! Characters are complex. Surprises thrown in everywhere.

I’m sick and this book was easy. I think that’s probably why I enjoyed it. Escape at its finest, is it not?

I read The Book Thief awhile back and was very impressed with it. Unfortunately, that set my expectations of Zusak pretty high and I Am The Messenger wasn’t written at quite the same level. It’s not bad, but it’s not brilliant, either.

It’s one of those semi-cheesy “moral of the story” kinds of books (which, as a side note, I typically love), emphasizing the importance of choosing the direction of your own life. There was a little bit of love-your-neighbor, a little bit of life-is-messy, and a whole lot of teenage angst and romance. It was all very emo.

There was also a prominent canine character who I think might be the best thing about the whole book.

But again, when my throat is on fire and my head is pounding, there’s truly nothing more magnificent than a double-spaced easy reader.

After reading The Book Thief I had high expectations...they were met. Quotable passages, interesting characters and a strange mix of twists and consistency. I'd really love to sit down for coffee with Zusak, because it's obvious in his writing that his mind works in a fascinating way, and I count it a privilege to be allowed into his thoughts and stories.

I finished this after reading it for a span of about four days. This is a long time for 357 pages since I am a pretty fast reader. I really just did not like the main character or the premise of the book. It had a lot of potential but the fact that the entire book was just a waste to Ed really did not appeal to me. Audrey was an unbelievable love interest. What was the need for the love interest? None.

I had such high expectations for this book after reading and loving tithe Book Thief and I was disappointed. I loved his style of writing, the storyline, the characters, and pretty much everything in that book and this book seemed just terrible in comparison. It was a struggle to go through it, considering the potential it had. The idea of the cards could have been made into a heartwarming story but instead we have a cheesy unrealistic romantic ending and Ed really no better off than he started.
