Was hoping this would be similar to The Lost Apothecary and I would learn cool facts about poisonous plants, but wasn't that interesting. I also questioned a lot of the main character's choices during her "investigation." The romance was just there...
I have to start off by saying I am an avid gardener so this subject matter hit me in the feels from the get go. I also love a good mystery and that’s exactly what this book delivered!
The main character was super likable and her love interest was equally interesting. I’m usually a thriller reader but every once in a while need a palate cleanser and this one did the trick. Still had the suspense of a poisoning but some lighthearted romance to even it out. Aside from the longer chapters which bummed me out, the character development and story line kept my interest thoroughly.
I loved the beautiful cover,too.
I can’t wait for the second in the series to come out.

•intriguing mystery
•satisfying ending
•great world building

Overall found this book very enjoyable! Ended up having to listen to the last 3rd on higher speed than I normally would so I could finish it before Libby took it back.

I'm not a mystery fan, but I do love historical fiction and botany! This book was well written, and I was drawn in by the characters immediately. The twists and turns of the mystery plotline kept me guessing all the way through to the end! The love story plotline is supportive in just the right way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
[b:A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons|58202849|A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons (Saffron Everleigh Mystery #1)|Kate Khavari|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1630338042l/58202849._SY75_.jpg|91234947] had several of my favorite things—plant people, historical fiction, romance, mysteries, and poisonous plants. This was a quick read with delightful characters, a wonderfully intricate mystery, poisonous plants, subtle romance, and assertive females. As a horticulturist, I loved all of the botanical subject matter and the inclusion of the dangerous species. Saffron is a dynamic, fun character and I'm excited for the next installment of her adventures, with and without Alexander!
Entertaining and I immediately bought and read the next book.
Weird jump to some flirting with a work colleague after having set up two prior unhappy interactions with work colleagues. It felt odd since she is spending so much time making sure she is being respected for her work and then using her “feminine wiles” on two separate characters.
A lot of the resolution wasn’t done by the main characters and took place outside of their view so they just have it explained to them at the end by another character.
Alex’s character had a lot of set up for emotional disturbances (PTSD) from the war that never really is a plot point in THIS book. Having read the second it comes up more but still felt out of place in the first book since I didn’t know that yet.

This was the kind of book I devoured when I was younger, raised on female investigators and believing I'd be looking into murders just like this book's heroine.
Kate Khavari takes us back to 1920's London, where the scene of the crime takes place at a dinner party. Someone has been poisoned and another framed! Our heroine, Saffron must work alongside her steamy colleague Alexander, to help clear her mentor's name from the crime. Khavari does an amazing job delving into the world of botany and definitely did her research. She has mastered the art of description because there were times I could actually see the plants. While I loved the backdrop, I just could not connect with the characters and wished there was a little more zest within the story.
