484 pages of nothing happening. I struggled to get through this book because of how boring it is, and how unlikable the characters are. I kept waiting for something to happen, but nothing happened. The only interesting part of the book was the Handbook at the end describing the different fantasy creatures. That was it. Just those few pages at the very end that had little to do with the book itself. Only a few of the creatures appear or are mentioned in the actual "story". The chapters are long. I checked a couple of them and they were over 30 pages. There was s*x in every chapter. I think that was the only thing the two characters had with each other.
Riften was an insensitive jerk through the whole book. He was also controlling. He got mad at her for studying magic. He got mad at her for trying to help. He got mad at her for being alone with Ruth. Are you seeing a theme here?
Maxi was a boring character. If she were a real person, she would have my compassion. If we were friends, I would be doing everything I could to help her heal and develop some self-esteem, but as a character in an unnecessarily long novel, she was boring. She had these secrets about herself that she should have revealed, but she never did. I kept waiting for her father to show up and for Riften to confront him for his abuse, but that never happened either.
I cannot believe this book is a series! If the author could not make anything happen in 484 pages, why should I believe anything will happen in the other books? I will not be reading the second one.
I really wanted to like this book. The description made it sound interesting, but it was not. It is so pretty, I do not want to donate it, but no way am I keeping a book that is this boring.

This book was extremely boring. I found a copy of it and the cover and sprayed edges pulled me in. That part was beautiful. But there’s no plot. Only travel, castle remodeling, talking and s*x. So much s*x. And half the time she’s scared or flinching from him. Not a super convincing romance. I forced myself thru it but I feel like I read basically nothing of value.
I remember liking the comic of this, and thought I’d enjoy the novel version. However this was just non-stop SA and the relationship seemed to be built on fear and misinterpretation of strong emotions, which I was having a hard time with knowing that this was ultimately a fantasy romance novel. Love the cover of the novel, the artwork is amazing, but not a story I’m interested in
