Mercy Watson Thinks Like a Pig by Kate DiCamillo

Mercy Watson likes to eat pansy's. Mercy's neighbor is planting trays of pansy's around the house and Mercy goes and eats them. Eugenia is livid and I would be too. She calls animal control. They all end up around Mrs. Watson's table for buttered toast. There is no talk of compensation. I have to stand on the side of flowers and destruction of property.

Still, this is some madcap goodness right here. I have enjoyed this series and it is a fun read for beginning readers. This might be my least favorite of the 6 Mercy Watson stories, but it was enjoyable. Kate is a wonder of an author.

Unlike most early-reader books, this one actually made me laugh out loud. Mercy's insouciant pigness defies everyone's attempts to re-invent her as some sort of porcine wonder: she remains -- gloriously -- just a pig, and there's great humour in watching others project consciousness onto her as she snuffles around, driven entirely by her appetites.

The whole series is great, but this is my favourite!

Ingrid: "This book was fun. The animal catcher, she landed on her head on a table, that was the best part." She wants to read more.

Me: Very accessible, funny stories, and awesome illustrations, of course. van Dusen is our current favorite author/illustrator.

Mercy Watson is the cutest pig in literature since Wilbur! Chris Van Dusen’s illustrations are colorful and shiny. I love his human characters - especially the expressions on their faces and their body shapes. Mercy Watson books are just like potato chips! You can’t read just one, you must read them all!
