The cast of characters is an interesting concept; however, I think some characters were more well developed than others. The main plot isn't what you think, the murder that is teased in the beginning does not happen until about 80% in. However, I did not really mind because I was invested in Lottie searching for answers regarding her mother.

Took way too long to get to the murder.

I thought it was fun, easy, somehow both relaxing and tense because of it's clear 50/50 combination of GBBO and murder mystery. The plot was a bit predictable, if not from the very beginning, at least from chapter to chapter. I loved how much it leaned into the specifics of Bake Off but agree with other reviews that I found myself hoping for British accents in the audiobook! Some of the characters seemed thrown in for plot without enough development or connection to the rest of the book. I would recommend to someone wanting an easy escape with a bit of suspense/mystery that isn't too stressful.

Eerie, unassuming, peculiar

We follow a hostess baker with their own reality competition show that is generally friendly/low-key and allows them to maintain the family mansion. We also follow the current season of contestants (six total).
Collectively they are dealing with their motivations for baking and being contestants on the show, combined with the drama introduced by a new co-host known for his angry outbursts when contestants don't measure up.

Growls, Howls, and Tail Wags πŸΊπŸ•:
-πŸ‘ Hi, can this be a new thing? What is it called, how can I find it? This story kept all my fav elements of a cozy mystery with a touch of thriller mystery elements. No cheese, no obvious series set-ups, no OTT cutsie plots. I like it.
-πŸ˜’ The ending felt a bit meh because of the open-ended conclusion
-πŸ‘ Seems so set up for a Scooby-Doo villain monolog ending, but avoided that entirely πŸ˜€

Cred Rating: Plausible.
Enjoy the scandalous but recognizable elements of celeb-fall-from-grace, foodies behaving badly, egotistical celeb chefs, competitive cooking reality show.

Mood Reading Match Up:
-Grown-up Goosebumps vibes (exploring a mansion, who-to trust)
-Dark cozy baking mystery (with relatable character-driven plot)
-Cooking reality show drama
-Red herrings with realistic amateur sleuthing
-Closed/locked room mystery in isolated-ish setting

Content Heads-Up: #metoo. Ageism (resolved). Classism.
