Wonderful writing. I have not read the first book, but that's not necessary. Peck captures emotions captured perfectly, and his characters are multifaceted.

Another gem of a book. I would like to be Grandma Dowdel when I grow up.

This wasn't as good as its predecessor, but still a pretty cute story.

This was just a really enjoyable book. The writing is beautiful and the characters just come alive. I laughed out loud multiple times at some of the jokes they played.

Oh Grandma Dowdel. She’s cunning, scheming, morally ambiguous… but ultimately she cares. And Mary Alice becomes more like her every day. These books are really just so wonderful. I didn’t like this one quite as much as the first one but settled on 5 stars anyway because I just really like both Grandma and Mary Alice. It also opened a window into a really interesting time in history, which I liked. Highly recommend.
