this was super fun! can’t wait to see what happens next!
3 stars
I have to say that this premise sounded interesting and I enjoyed it. Nothing terrific but it was fun to read. The premise gave us a really interesting idea, I'd even say never used before and I find it cool.
But I need to admit that the story was a bit boring at times. I didn't skip anything, I'm not that type of a reader, but it could be a bit long at times and I actually can't say that I remember anything from the plot. Aside from the important stuff.
With the characters, Sophie was hella annoying. It bothered me that most of the story was told from her point of view. She thought she was amazing and worthy of becoming a princess. Her friendship with Agatha felt a bit toxic. On the other hand, Agatha was a total sweet heart, I just wanted to give her a hug and I loved reading about her. Tedros could also be a bit annoying with his toxic masculinity. But him and Agatha were adorable.
Also, the scene at the end, where that creepy-who-knows-how-many-hundred-years-old guy kisses Sophie??? That's totally innapropriate. At first I thought Agatha and Sophie were around twelve so I was a bit confused with all the dating drama but then I looked it up and they are supposed to be fifteen. Still doesn't excuse the weird kissing scene.
Overall, I recommend trying it out. It's not a bad book, maybe if I were younger, I would enjoy it more. Still happy that I read it.

This book is leaps and bounds better than the movie. I wish it was around when I was its target audience.
**NO MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS REVIEW**
“Only once you destroy who you think you are can you embrace who you truly are.”
I honestly do not know what I am supposed to think about this book. It was alright I suppose. I cant really comment on the writing since I did listen to the audio of it. I do not think the descriptions were too lengthy? But i did have the audio on double speed, so.... I did feel like it went fairly fast, there was not alot of lag. But I do believe that if one wasnt paying attention closely, you would miss a vital detail, and then get confused the rest of the chapter or so. Also half the time I was unsure if it was in Agtha's head or Sophies. Usually within a few lines and there is whining, i knew it was sophie.
I primarily 'read' this because I wanted to compare to the movie. And of course, there was more in the book. But, I liked how it was more linear in the movie, and how it explained things better. The book is a bit more scattered and the true rush of drama only comes in like the last 30%...
Plus all the themes, about beauty being on the inside and such, thats all swell and good, yada yada.
I did like how the author slowly managed to depict Sophie's darker mentality, but it also seemed like it just hit her at random, to start truly behaving on the outside how she was on the inside. The transition was not that smooth, but understandable.
Not going to lie, I felt like Agatha's transition was the same. She spends much of the book just wollowing in despair and acting ugly and just wanting to go home. There isnt much she can do though, so she suffered through the school, and I feel like the pivitol point when she behaviors as beautiful as she is on the inside, comes towards the end of the book. Sure, there are some inklings of her true nature, definitely more than sophie...butI do know.
Maybe if the book was shorter, it would of gotten to the plot points sooner. Also, I am not going t address all the controversy I see in other reviews because I am just not that invested tbh...let others fight that fight. Remember, this is all my opinion, if you want your own, read the book.

Ok, OKAY.
This book was so good.
I watched the movie first and heard a ton of complaints that it strayed too far from the source material and that the book was better, so I gave it a go and WOW.
This book has such a wonderful fairytale vibe to it…I can’t explain it. Very much gives Ever After High vibes in the best way possible.
My only complaint would be sofie, she drives me insane, the constant back and fourth throughout the book of who’s side she was on and who she trusted. (Also she’s just so self centered and conceded-) besides that it was wonderful.
