Ali Smith's Spring has reminded me what an inspiring joy Katherine Mansfield's letters were to me in my youth. Though I preferred Virginia Woolf's work I liked Mansfield miles more as a person. In fact she's still my favourite person I've never met. I adore this quote by Ali Smith's narrator in Spring: "She shocked into distaste all those people who thought they were the social revolutionaries. Made them seem suburban. Woolf, Bell, the Bloomsburies."

We've all been shocked this week by witnessing the vulnerability of Paris' most recognisable (or most elegant) landmark. Another Parisian landmark for me has always been the Select Hotel in the Place de la Sorbonne where she often stayed. I always go there when I'm in Paris and have a quiet moment with Katherine.

How many years elapsed before the next edition of her collected letters came out used to drive me bonkers. I only realised yesterday the final instalment is finally available. The cheapest price on Amazon was 95 quid. I've forked it out, the highest price I've ever paid for a book. It's now in the post.
