Having read the second book in the series, I wanted to start at the beginning however this book actually starts at the end of Hulda's career. I'm not sure if this order benefits the reader and not willing to re-read the second to refresh my memory.
Se lee muy fácil y es entretenido aunque para mi gusto le faltó más chicha por el medio a nivel de hablarme del crimen. El final me ha dejao así ._.

This was an ok read set in Iceland. The main character was a 64 year old female detective getting ready for retirement but picks up one final case. I liked that the mc was an older lady but the story was kind of boring.
This really was just your average, run of the mill “whodunnit”

This one was pretty brutal for me. If you're a parent of small kids and you're sensitive about child death, here's a warning:
The main character, Hulda, has a daughter that commited suicide. For a large part for the book, you're under the impression that some of the flashbacks could possibly be of Hulda and her daughter. This particularly distressed me, because it's honestly a really devastating situation. Actual spoiler: the flashbacks are of Hulda as a child and her mother, not of Hulda and her child. You can probably figure this out if you take into consideration her husband/the fact that Hulda doesn't know her dad etc, but I'm on audiobook at work so I'm not thinking too hard about it.
Otherwise, I clearly finished the book so I enjoyed it the other aspects. And honestly by the end, I had come to terms with the above aspects.
Epilogue is a real kick in the pants though, lol.
Also, reading "Death at the Sanatorium", I can't even imagine what Magnus is going through at that time.

I picked this book up based upon the recommendation of Audrey from Chapter and Converse. I absolutely loved it and found myself just sitting down and reading it nonstop. This is an Icelandic noir thriller which I think I will definitely be reading more of. Our protagonist is Hulda a 65 year old veteran on the police force who is coming to terms with the fact that she is being pushed into a retirement and she does not once. In the first several chapters we learn that her early retirement is much sooner than she anticipated because now she only has two weeks before a younger replacement is brought in. Her boss tells her that if she doesn’t want to start her retirement today she can look into a cold case if she wants. Hulda definitely does and she knows just the case that she wants to look into, that if a Russian woman who was found dead a year ago. This was a super fast passed read and I was rooting for Hulda the entire time. The ending was not what I personally wanted but it fit the book: I will be picking of the next book in the series very soon.
