I liked the overall atmosphere, very well set. It feels insane that you could go to prison for being gay in the 1950s in the UK. In Brighton too, such a gay place. That’s why i read this book by the way, because it is set in Brighton and i will be visiting in August. I must say i was a little let down by the ending, which i didn’t find compelling enough. That’s why i bumped down from 4 stars to 3.75 although i’d initially gone for 4. The ending has definitely tainted my view of the book as i’ve just finished it, but overall it was a good reading experience. Compelling story with interesting themes (homophobia, feminism, marriage). Well built world and atmosphere. Definitely suspense because the whole story takes a while to be unveiled.

Amazing storyline and writing! Although it was a bit hard to read as English is not my first language. Can't wait for the movie!!

I know why I am not a fan of romance novels. It was okay and towards the end it got better. But isn‘t anyone concerned about the weird obsession both Marion and Patrick have towards Tom?
I loved the way the story pulled me in and made the feeling of living in the fiftys so real. The struggle so many people had back then is woven in the plot.

3,5* i really liked the writing and found it very interesting that Tom was actually not the main focus of the book, i know most people are disappointed in not having toms pov but i think it’s perfect cause the book actually is about patrick and marion’s relationship and their love placed on someone i think they really idealize. from where i stand tom doesnt even feel real, he’s just the product of patrick and marion’s fantasies. i think it’s really interesting and i can’t wait to see the movie.
