i have decided that besides the book Blindness...I think that i hate Jose Saramago.
I read this book on a cross country flight. I felt like I was stuck with no place to run...and so I was tortured to finish this novel.
Perhaps something is lost in the translation of these novels...like...maybe the interesting parts? But I find that the story drones on and on, and really never gives you anything to dig into.
I'm glad I read Blindness first, as I really enjoyed that book...but after reading this and The Double, I can positively state that I will never read another Saramago novel...for fear that I will bore myself to death.

I enjoyed reading this and liked the characters but didn't feel that the story arc took me somewhere. I think the Cave and Blindness were much more complete in that way.
An interesting travelogue of 5 individuals, 1 dog, and 2 horses under interesting geopolitical and philosophical circumstances. From the original Portugese the English translation was in part captivating and I found myself at times entranced in the flow and content of the story.
Not my favorite Saramago's work by any means... I actually found parts more difficult to get through than the political ramblings of "Seeing". I'm surprised that I didn't enjoy it more because it had a lot of potential in the development, but like most of Saramago's works there is a lot that happens without justification strictly to explore philosophy and human behavior. There are so many directions the story could have taken, but the route that was chosen left me unsatisfied.
