Connelly lays bare the bureaucracy of policing as he tackles Covid, the insurrection, Black Lives Matter, and defunding the police while spinning a thriller that resurrects a cold case, uncovers corrupt cops, and showcases how doing the right thing is not always consistent with the CYA mentality of the LAPD.

Ballard and Bosch collaborate effortlessly, like a Vulcan mind meld as they go after a duo of rapists and two murders lead to more tied to a financial syndicate of, can you believe this, dentists.

Lots of action and come to Jesus moments for Renee as she encounters rampant careerism and peers doing the minimum. A righteous ending where she too appears to leave LAPD with an exit much like Harry’s. Additionally the reader is left wanting to see what’s next for Renee Ballard. She’s got some intriguing choices to make, personally and professionally.

This book is outstanding , Michael Connelly is in top form. I’ve read most of the Harry Bosch books and two of the ones with Haller, and now all the Ballard and Bosch series. This book is very tightly written, drips with suspense throughout, and rings authentic with modern Los Angeles, complete within the setting of the pandemic, and references to masks, the vaccine, and the difficult circumstances between the police and the public, including references to protests and efforts to defund policing, and how all of this impacts the detective’s work environment. As each chapter ends, I’m immediately drawn into continuing on to the next.

I’m not going to give away any spoilers. We are rapidly drawn into a complex web of multiple murders and serial rapes. The story is complex with multiple characters and victims, all expertly and coherently woven together.

This book is more about Ballard than Bosch, she takes the lead and is really the main character here, Bosch appears in Chapter 8. It took me some time to warm to her as a character in this series, but she is presented masterfully and has really developed as the series has progressed. Her life situation is more realistic now, and she is more likable as a character. Bosch, while he has appropriately aged during the series, is presented in good form, not as the aging and almost decrepit man he was in some of the previous novels. His mind is sharp, he is his usual gritty, rough around the edges self, and he is seamlessly blended into the story as the main supporting cast member.

Not enough Harry Bosch for me. And I don’t care to be reading about COVID. Like I’m living through it, don’t want to read about masks, vaccines etc. But I still love Michael Connelly. Just give me more Harry Bosch next time!

I enjoy the character of Renee, and Michael Connelly sure knows how to pace a thriller, but I feel a little like Ballard is turning into the female version of Harry Bosch

In my humble opinion not the best book by Connelly but it had some interesting twists and some fun stuff as well. Mörkare än Midnatt (The Dark Hours) by Michael Connelly is mainly about Renée Ballard and partly about Harry Bosch. I find that I'm getting tired of the eternal problem of bad bosses and cowardly police officers that only covers their own behinds. Maybe it's a reflection of the reality and Iam sad to say I believe it is. Well if you write fiction you can skip reality. Still I will continue to read this great author that has given me so many fun hours reading.
