4.5 stars | The book hooks you in page by page with the dark and horrific reality of using meth. It's scary to watch a person slip into an inescapable circumstance. This book is entertaining and has a twisted yet beautiful plot. —Joseph C., '23

I reread this book for the first time in years, & it was still so good. I love the way that Ellen Hopkins writes & formats her books. This one was the first that I ever read of hers, & lead me down a path of reading only her books for a while in high school. It was still good this time, & I may just reread some more of her older YA books again soon!

As an aspiring writer who has interest in both poetry and narration this book was an amazing discovery. Ellen Hopkins takes the true horror of her daughter’s life and turns it into a thrilling, terrifying, and addicting piece of literature. The imagery is not only found in her unique descriptions, but also in the word patterns themselves. The words are organized across the page in the form of other words, bottles, and spirals to show her descent into the underworld of Meth addiction. One of my favorite aspects of this story is the fact that it is written solely in first person. I have always written from inside my character’s mind, and this showed me an effective way to execute that. The reader sees only what she does, and thinks all of her thoughts. This narration is so personal you can almost feel the raw emotion coming off of the page.

I don't usually like books with this kind of atmosphere. I really don't like books that are written like a poem. It was a good book with a whole lota life lessons in it. Don't Do Drugs. That's about all I learned.
