I was obsessed with The 71/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and couldn’t wait to read this one— but it honestly disappointed me. Bad character development, the plot set in the 1600s made for kind of trite, hack-y writing, and the end wasn’t good.

arent hayes - character of all time!!!!! if there’s one thing i love it’s a sexy bodyguard (even though mr turton wouldn’t agree on the sexy part, and i feel like that would make us great friends)
in all seriousness, i devoured this book in a little more than 48 hours because it was made for me: set on a ship, a creepy story about a devil, forbidden love, forced proximity, the kindest, sexiest, cleverest bodyguard ever …… and i need to thank mr turton forgiving me a sexy duel that ends with arent straddling his opponent and almost beating him to death , he truly gets me like no one else gets me
i will miss arent so much, no other character i’m gonna meet this year will even come close to him 😔

To be fair, if I hadn't read Evelyn Hardcastle previously, I very well may have given this 5 stars. This one wasn't as mind-blowingly original as Evelyn Hardcastle, and I figured out a few of the twists before they were revealed, but it was still a really fun read that did manage to surprise me a few times! Definitely worth a read!
I'd go 3.5 on this if I could. Stories about 17th century ship voyages are not really my cup of tea, usually, but I read and really enjoyed Turton's earlier book, The 7 1/2 Lives of Evelyn Hardcastle, so I wanted to give it a try. I found this one very engaging in the beginning. It bogged down some about half to 2/3 of the way through (WAY too many deaths for me), but the ending is interesting: an unexpected twist and some validation for the best characters. Not sure I totally buy the end of the ending, so I'm a bit ambivalent. It makes me want to read Evelyn Hardcastle again, though, so not all bad. I'd try another of Turton's novels.

A good twisty mystery with plenty of action. I think I wished for a bit more adventure but it was quite clever lol the way through.
