A girl in her 20s is murdered on a dark rural road. The book’s not a mystery, but rather an examination of those affected by the crime, from the girl’s friends living in a dorm for insurance sellers, to the suspect’s isolated elderly mother.
I've read several Japanese thrillers at this point. I enjoyed this one, but not as much as some. I had a feeling I was missing some layer of references in this one. But interesting characters and setting and moral ambiguity.
3.5 starter -better than average, but something missing to pass it with distinction. And here, the something was the ambiguity as to the ending, and the thought process that went behind the violence. A girl who likes finding online dates and make them pay for favors, is found strangled near a lonely highway pass,and her middle class parents are devastated. Soon dirty secrets emerge, and the suspects narrow down to two of her recent boyfriends - both of whom had interactions with her on the fatal day. Another girl enters the scene, this one who attempts online dating not for money, but only for assuaging her loneliness. The lives of all those who are immediately affected is chalked out, and finally the Villain is apprehended.
Loved reading the book. Would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries with character development.

吉田修一對於社會小人物的心境描寫非常引人入勝也很容易充滿共感，透過一場驚人的兇殺案去揭露這些角色私底下的寂寞、虛榮，以及長期累積對生活的無奈及無助。如同標題，在閱讀過程中能夠去思考整本書所謂的「惡人」到底是誰，結尾的反轉真的讓人心情糾結而且惆悵！
Ho pareri contrastanti. Da una parte penso che sia un thriller abbastanza debole perché c'è poca tensione e pochi dubbi sul responsabile del crimine, io almeno non sono rimasta mai sorpresa dallo sviluppo degli eventi. Dall'altra invece sono rimasta spiazzata davanti al quadro sociale che ci viene presentato dall'autore. C'è una forte critica sociale, come era successo in Parade. Ho ritrovato lo stesso mood, le stesse tematiche che fanno riflettere molto sulla società d'oggi e sul comportamento delle persone. Soprattutto per quanto riguarda la superficialità e la fragilità dei rapporti umani.

The mystery of who did the deed is fairly obvious if you have the paperback. This is more social commentary once you know who did it.
