I really did not enjoy the flowering writing. I wanted this to be much more concise. The plot would have been interesting if the style had been more interesting to me.
I wasn't crazy about most of the parade of privilege narrative, but I felt the ending made it worthwhile.
typical fitzgerald; so romantic, so boring, so american

Absolutely adored this book. The kind of book that you have to stop and take a picture of a page because it is just so beautifully written.
This is my favorite book and this was my first time reading it since high school. It gets better as I age. Fitzgerald's writing is absolutely beautiful - lyrical, full of poignant observations on life. The bizarre structure of the book, at least to me, parallels the chaotic, ever-changing life of Amory; I especially love the play format of Rosalind's section, where the young lovers merely act out the motions of romance perhaps without ever really feeling it. The sudden discussion of socialism in the last fifteen pages, which is simultaneously interesting and what every single boy educated in the northeast spews out at some point in his life.
I get the criticism of this book - Amory can be extremely annoying, the writing is long-winded and naive, the plot is nonexistent. And I can honestly think of rebuttals for all of those things but I won't write them.
Anyways I love this book.

Definitely a quintessential modernist novel. An interesting, albeit slow-paced, plot. There are also some stand-out details which foreshow thematic and plot elements Fitzgerald would further explore in The Great Gatsby.
I read this book because I liked Gatsby, and supposedly if you liked one it's common to like the other. I did very much enjoy the story though I was afraid that I wasn't going to like the main character at first. Everything turned out alright in the end (that's not a spoiler. I'm saying that I eventually grew to like him).
Though I'm almost certain that some of the points that Fitzgerald was making went over my head. I appreciated what I did understand of the book. It wasn't very much like Gatsby in my opinion though. Of course, I could tell it was the same author, but I think Gatsby had a very different kind of charm.
Nonetheless, five stars for the literary genius of Fitzgerald!
