DID NOT FINISH: 9%

Overly academic/formal writing style didn't suit me at this time.

Insanely interesting and the last chapter was very exciting to read.

Powerful and moving. I need to reflect more on how 21st century embroidery evokes, subverts, and evolved from this rich history. I learned embroidery from Tik Tok - an entire anthology could be written on embroidery through globalization and technology!

Deeply disappointed there wasn't multi-generational history of Slavic embroidery. Instead, Parker reduces and oversimplified Russian embroidery in the context of this Anglo-centric history. I'm certain the history of Slavic and Balkan embroidery is equally, if not more relevant to Russian socialist embroidery - especially during the anti-Western campaigns! Applying a Western analysis of gender is inherently flawed - especially since class consciousness manifested as women's involvement in socialist revolution and political participation! Many of the domestic-professional gender divisions persisted, but I would've appreciated more insight here.
Also very disappointed that Parker mentioned but didn't discuss or show African embroidery.

For some reason this book to me about four months to get through (apologies to the Stockholm library). Its no fault of the pacing, I believe it is well written and even, but it is Very dense in terms of information. A lot of beutiful pictures, would have liked to see them in colour. Informative and very interesting, but man does is take its time
