This was my second Kate Morton (The Clockmaker’s Daughter being the first), and I found it to be a great improvement. I struggled to get through the prologue, but when Percy makes his big discovery of the dead Turner family (again—this is prologue, so not a spoiler!), I was hooked.
Though I was able to guess pieces of the big reveal, I certainly didn’t guess the biggest moments, and I enjoyed the ending immensely. I like that, looking back, all the careful evidence is there. I hate when authors just throw random plot points together and hope the ride will distract from the plot holes, but Morton doesn’t disappoint.
I wouldn’t want to scrap any of the important details needed for everything to fit, but at times this felt long for the sake of being long…like Morton really wanted a tome with her name on it. I think it would have to be on the longer side, but I feel like it could’ve been 50-100 pages shorter, which keeps me from giving it a 5.
This is a sleepy, powerful, and satisfying mystery. Some describe it as a thriller, but that seems silly to me given the pacing.

This was so well done. When I wasn’t reading it, I was theorising about all the things that could have happened and it kept me guessing till the very end. What a brilliant read! I think I’ll have to add some more Kate Morton books to my TBR list!
