This book is ok but the narrator is god awful. The accents for the children, it’s like nails on a chalkboard. If you want to read this book, don’t get the audio version.

A cozy, but creepy and peculiar story that was wayyyy more fun than I thought it would be!
I’ve never seen this movie and had only a vague idea of the plot.
The paperback edition I have contains illustrations and images which just brought the story to life (not images from the movie, these look like historical creepy photos).
Jacob is our MC and as a child he loved his grandfathers stories about his youth and the time he lived with other kids with magical and peculiar abilities. Jacob’s family thinks that both he and the grandfather are crazy because the stories are so far fetched. Jacob goes to see if he can find the old children’s home to prove that it existed and to prove his parents wrong.
What he finds is wayyyy more proof than he anticipated.
I love time twist themes in books, the characters were peculiar as hell but I loved those kids especially Emma.
This book make be chuckle and it was such a cute but weird adventure.
Now I have to go see the movie so I can compare and get more visuals.
3.5 stars.
Once the book really got going (and he finally MET the kids and realized it was all real) I ended up really liking it. The way the author weaves the story around the photographs included in the book is fascinating. The only thing that bothered me was the relationship between Emma and Jacob. It seemed to me she was just looking at Jacob as a replacement for his grandfather and not really seeing him and the fact that Jacob calls her out on this at one point but then keeps kissing her, etc. and its never really mentioned again really bothered me. Overall I quite enjoyed this once it got going. I don't know what I expected when I started this book but the story was unique and fascinating. I love the spin on special 'powers' and time travel. It felt quite fantastical, but also gritty. I'm looking forward to the next book when that comes out and the graphic novel/ manga (not sure which it'll be, manga I think, but not sure) when that comes out too.

I had high hopes for this book, I really did.
This story is actually really interesting and has so so so much potential, but it just ended up feeling so immature. I didn’t like the main character, and all the other characters had so little development and backstory that I just didn’t care about them.
The writing was just too kiddish for me and it made it unrealistic and unrelatable. I know it’s fantasy and the entire point is to be unrealistic but I’ve read plenty of fantasy where the writing and character development is so good that you can at least believe that in the fantasy setting that it is realistic. This just didn’t do it for me.

I waffled between giving this one or two stars, but I'm pretty disappointed and don't feel generous. I won't continue the series, but I may check out the movie one day, when time distances me from this book; and then only because it's Tim Burton's work.
I loved the atmosphere the book built until Jacob met the peculiars, then it fizzled and I stopped caring. I'm not saying there weren't, what some may call, interesting plot points, but the brooding atmosphere got sucked right out of the book. Photos accompanying the story stopped being mysterious and just highlighted details of the story. It bored me.
