Somewhat slow to begin, a beautiful and endearing book. I really enjoyed the writing, story, and historical context. Modern classic!

After living in quarantine, reading a story about house arrest was fun. Absolutely loved it.
Although at times there were Russian references which I didn't get. The book is intriguing and funny with so many different characters.
Alexander Rostov our primary protagonist is a perfect gentleman outsmarting his circumstances with his cool demeanor and wit. But eventually, he meets his match through a very unpredictable source.

I really really wanted to like this but had SUCH a hard time staying focused on it. There was quite a bit of humor in it and I found myself laughing in pretty much every chapter with a line here or there. The personality of the Count was amazing, and I could picture him in my head throughout the read. I also loved Nina and Sophia, but they didn't have quite the depth that he did.
Maybe the timing was wrong, or maybe I just wasn't as into it at the time. It seemed to drag for me and I was getting antsy to start something else. It wasn't horrible - I've read much worse - but just wasn't a favorite...

Absolutely loved this on audio! Who knew that the story of a single man, largely told within the confines of one hotel over a 30 year period could be this riveting?
