This was the June read in the virtual bookclub I am in and I had seen it around previously and was excited that I was chosen.
Plants and queers what more can a person what? Hahah. A Botanical Daughter was compared to Mexican Gothic, and I think because o haven’t read that one I didn’t really have any expectations going in. It’s also a retelling of Frankenstein, which I don’t like because it was boring af and I was worried this one would be too. It was a slower burn but I found it easy to consume, it kept me reading. Our two first main characters, Gregor and Simon, a botanist and a taxidermist who lived together in a Victorian (what I am picturing) mansion with a huge attached greenhouse and an underground lair of sorts. Both of these men keep getting more and more creative with their creations and it leads to them digging up a grave or a recently deceased girl and using her body as a substrate for a monstrous plant. And I approve haha. I’m one of those people that wants a tree pod when I die. Anyways, back to the story. Now our main characters are queer, probably not married due to the times but are living together and maybe had this yearning for a child. They did hire our third main character as their maid and later nanny/ babysitter. Jenny, I loved her the most. For me she finds this found family who accepts her, she lost her girlfriend but gets her back in the end. There’s a little sapphic spice. I found the back story of Constance was heartbreaking but again I feel like it was realistic to the time period. I also enjoyed the details, the plants o can picture them and want them ahaha.
Was this book horror? To me, not really. I saw it more of that love story, being reunited with a lost love with that side of a mystery.
Now I would say yes I’d recommend it but I don’t know to who, I think the majority of my bookclub did not enjoy it hahah. I was definitely the black sheep.

be gay, do crime. literally.
it took me a while to complete the read cause it's slow.
love the queer representation however there is only sex scene described and it's between the two females.. the males it's just implied. and the whole thing read as a fetish...
nice found family, but there is an underdeveloped character and almost no growth as well.
it's cute but eh.
