An Agatha Christie-esque whodunit, this was a fun book. I liked the development of the characters and I think Turton did an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing. It does drag ever so slightly in the middle, but the ending is completely worth it! A great debut novel.

I really enjoyed this one. I read reviews beforehand from people who were confused by all the characters, but I wasn’t somehow, or people who thought the ending was a let down, but I thought it was good and a twist I didn’t expect. The repetition didn’t get old since it was from different perspectives and the mystery was enjoyable.

it held my attention but sagged in the middle. the book read so smoothly and the descriptions were so nice throughout
"thankfully the leaves and twigs are so demoralized by the earlier rain, they don't have the heart to cry out beneath my feet" ch51
also had some notable quotes on living a solid life
"I cant leave without knowing why I'm going, and I can't promise not to come back until I'm certain of why I came here in the first place" ch53
and
"Instead of being something to fear, it can be a promise I make myself. A chance to be braver or kinder to make what was wrong right. To be better than I am today." ch60
and there were sociopolitical elements woven throughout
"Blackheath was meant to rehabilitate us, but bars can't build better men and misery can only break what goodness remains. This place pinches out the hope in people, and without that hope, what use is love or compassion or kindness? Whatever the intention behind its creation, Blackheath speaks to the monster in us, and I have no intention of indulging mine any longer. It's had free rein long enough." ch58

but I also found it lacking a good solid conclusion to the plot and
explanation of all of the confusing back and forth of POVs. There is maybe 1/2 a chapter at the end that attempts to sum it up and it doesn't feel adequate to explain Evelyn and it doesn't connect to the idea that the story proposes: a criminal can change :/ definitely engaging and intriguing but left me with some nightmares and gore and not as many satisfying answers in a bow
