DNF - fatphobic and honestly stupid

I really liked the plotting and the whodunit aspect of this book. The supernatural element was fun and added another layer of interest. The whole book felt a lot like playing a video game in a good way and the characters were nicely drawn out and distinct enough that the body-switching thing was pretty easy to follow.

The character development and overall twist fell a little flat for me. I really liked the concept of murder mystery solving as rehabilitation, and it didn't bother me too much that the author didn't go too far into the mechanics of how Aidan was waking up in a different body / where this was all taking place / etc. But, the turnaround with Anna's character didn't really work for me. Her backstory was given maybe two sentences really late in the story. I understood that she'd been the leader of an international terrorist organization, but it was hard to understand what a bad person she was when Turton didn't go into really any detail at all about her crimes besides just that one sentence description. I think it would have worked better to describe some of the crimes the terrorists were responsible for or more of the impact that she'd had on other people. Also, Aidan's decision to forgive her didn't seem very monumental because he'd been on her side for basically the whole book. I think it would have been better if he'd had more of a change of heart. Anna seemed like a nice and good person for 90% of the book and one paragraph about how she used to be a criminal didn't really bring the moral dilemma of the main character deciding to set her free to life.

Also, I thought it was weird that Aidan could basically feed her the answer to the mystery and it counted as her figuring it out herself and was enough to allow the jailers to let her go. Shouldn't she have had to figure it out more on her own?

It took me until more than halfway to get into it, but the ending was pretty good. I did not see the twist, so that was fun. I got the sense that you do grow with the main character, so I enjoyed that aspect of it. I wish that we were given more time to explore
the prison system and have commentary on that.
overall though, it’s been on my list for awhile and I’m glad that I read it, but I’ve read better and gotten hooked sooner.
