MXTX has done it again, oh my god. that was another solid entry to the TGCF series with the return of so many of the side characters I’ve come to love and adore so much; and of course hualian, my loves and the two that still remain the heart of the novel.
we finally get the reveal of White No Face, Jun Wu, who I personally want to burn to death and seal under the mountain. no words will ever be enough to describe the absolute detest I have for this man. I was spoiled many volumes ago who White No Face was, and at first I thought it would ruin the experience for me going into this novel, but I was pleasantly surprised that it did not! MXTX is an absolute powerhouse at creating compelling flashbacks for her characters, and Jun Wu is no exception as the Crown Prince of Wuyong. it was haunting to see just how similar his past was to Xie Lian’s, and there were parts i had chills. you feel bad for the guy… until you don’t. once he snaps, he is the literal worst. the way he toys with Xie Lian and the way he’s been manipulating him since the start of book 1 is vile. worse when you realize he wants to mold Xie Lian into the same psychopath that he now is. i got chills when everything came together. please beat the living daylights out of him, Xie Lian!! we are all literally rooting for you.
i love how they fleshed out the state preceptor more in this novel, and it was heartbreaking as he had to watch Jun Wu go down the path of insanity. he’s a supporting character you immediately fall in love with and root for and i love how much he adores Xie Lian in this. his interactions with Hua Cheng had me laughing so hard too, especially when he finds out he’s been foul mouthing Hua Cheng right to his face.
and god, the big, idiotic grin i let out when Shi Qingxuan was alive!! I LOVE THE WIND MASTER WITH MY WHOLE HEART. the black water arc had me in shambles, i was a mess and depressed, so seeing that my boi Shi Qingxuan was alive and still the same, pure hearted, cheerful baby made me wanna cry.
i’ve gotta talk about Yinyu too because god did Yinyu’s death made me feel numb and empty. i still can’t believe he got killed off. it’s always the pure babies that get the saddest ends *sniffs*. even with the opportunity to be the most powerful, Yinyu stayed true and pure to his beliefs. Yinyu’s past was terrible and to die for Qing Yi is twisted yet so heartbreakingly beautiful.
qi rong, good god. love him, hate him, qi rong in the end went out on a heroic(?) note and i think in another life, he’d actually be a great dad. he’s done the absolute worst things to Xie Lian, but deep down, he still had a heart of gold to protect little Guzi and I think that was really sweet.
of course what’s TGCF without talking about hualian?! we have reached the point where they are openly kissing fOr sPiriTuAl eNerGY, and i am 100% here for it. Hua Cheng has gotten naughtier and cheekier, and I freaking love it. the way he knows Xie Lian the best, is able to suspect when things are wrong and swoops in without a moment’s hesitation to save his hubby. Hua Cheng is the standard, y’all. I love how Xie Lian wants to be the one protecting Hua Cheng, too. they’re just too cute and I cannot wait for the inevitable marriage.
I didn’t really have any issues with this novel and I think it was pretty solid throughout! i saw a lot of people that didn’t like the big battle towards the end, but honestly i didn’t mind. it’s a fantasy book, after all. sometimes you just gotta suspend your belief and play dumb. but i definitely think the battle scene will benefit more when we get it animated in the donghua. my only real issue was the abrupt cliffhanger!! it felt so unexpected and unsatisfying, and it was a weird way to cut off book 7. i wish the publishers found a better place to cut off, but minor nitpicks.
i cannot wait for the final novel even if i don’t wanna say goodbye *sniffs*

I love the way the state preceptor gets defensive of Xie Lian and that's probably why Quan Yizhen trusted him with Yin Yu. And Pei Ming of all people trying to teach Quan Yizhen that Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's version of passing along energy is NOT one he should use. "Fluffy child."
