I may have given this an extra star because I know (knew, online) the author, and it's pretty cool to read a novel written by someone familiar to you, but I also enjoyed the read, especially the uncomfortable aspect of being in the head of an unreliable (psychotic) narrator.

Absolutely blown away. This book confronts you with a woman who has inherited a psychosis from her mother. She believes she must watch astronauts sleep in order to keep them alive. This includes breaking in their homes and planning their deaths if they are not able to sleep well. The dread and fear you feel as she slowly loses control of her facade of sanity is alarming. You pity the kind people who are deceived by her careful acting, just as you pity Lela for not understanding her friends and the love they have for her. The delicate twining of reality and hallucination has you doubting your own senses at times, and the slow bubbles of emotion that threaten to snap Lela's mind provoke the same in the reader as you move through the pages. The conclusion is as inevitable as it is heartbreaking. Aside from some minor copy errors, this is an incredible debut novel.

Good attempt at a first novel - Nicole created a well crafted story and interesting characters. There were some parts of the story that seemed a bit out of place and the dialog was sometimes grating, but, overall, I enjoyed it!

I look forward to her next novel!

It's worth a read!

Talk about a crazy book! When Nicole Wolverton emailed me about her novel, The Trajectory of Dreams, it sounded intriguing, especially because she likened it to Gone Girl. I was pretty excited to read it.

The Trajectory of Dreams is a novel about Lela, a woman who will do everything in her power in order to save the upcoming space shuttle launches from disaster. Lela works at a sleep study clinic, volunteers at the local library, and sneaks into astronaut’s houses in order to secretly study their sleep patterns. You know, the normal stuff.

Something is clearly strange about Lela and her whole situation. She feels alone on her mission but regularly communicates with her cat, Nike, and her deceased father, who both communicate back.

There is so much going on in this novel, and I just could not wait to find out what was fully going on. Like Gillian Flynn did in Gone Girl, Nicole Wolverton gave us pieces of information but left the completion of the puzzle until the end.

I do wish that when I finally found out what was going on that I found out in a slightly different way, but that didn’t take much away from my experience with the novel overall. I also figured out some of the pieces on my own, but was still very surprised with certain aspects that I can’t reveal here because you’ll just have to find out for yourself.

If you enjoy a psychological thriller, then you’d enjoy reading The Trajectory of Dreams by Nicole Wolverton. You’ll have to wait until it comes out in March 2013, but stick it on your to-read list!

I accepted this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

What other psychological thrillers are out there that I should read?

Thanks for reading,

A psychological thriller that is an excellent study of a woman's mental illness caused by genetics and a tragedy witnessed in childhood. This is a story unlike any other. You will not be disappointed.

Completely absorbing psychological thriller. It replicates that disturbing, sinister atmosphere of Gone Girl, with a plot and characters that are all its own. I had some issues with the side characters, otherwise this would have been a 5-star for me. As it is, it's still easily a 4.5. 4.75? Goodreads, I need more options. http://www.thewellreadredhead.com/2013/03/book-review-trajectory-of-dreams-by.html (link active 3/10/13)

I had the pleasure of meeting the author at our restaurant one evening and she spoke a bit about her novel. It sounded fascinating, and I'm pleased that it turned out to be. Quite different from my usual reading material, let's just say it's a radically unusual viewpoint for the narrator/protagonist of the story. To say more would be to give the plot away.
