As someone says in a review below, this is really a holiday read, disguised as historical fiction.
Certainly, there is some good writing here - Liardet depicts the cold, shame and hunger of Ellen's early days most evocatively, as she does the general privations of the British war, and Ellen's enormous love for Pamela. However, the middle part of the book dragged a little as it headed to the finale that anyone could see coming.
Some gorgeous phrases here, but it all felt a little soapy in the end.

The idea of the story was better than the execution. Could have used some editing to tighten up the story.
Finally I have finished this book! I can't believe this this has taken me so long to read.. A cute historical read, made me question if it was based on historical events
Storyline sounded good but it was a very slow start and a very anti-climatic ending. Not a bad read but not a lot of excitement either!

Beginning story had lots of potential but the book lost me pretty fast. Not a clear story line to be found and a thousand of the smallest details.
This is yet another WWII historical fiction novel for me. I love them and they tend to be my "go to" books when I find myself in a slump. This book had so much potential, but just did not seem to deliver.
This is the story of Ellen finding a child, Pamela, asleep on a bus. Ellen takes her home and the story begins. I wanted more even as I completed the last page. I'm still thinking about Ellen, her husband and Pamela. Because of that, I will give this a strong 3.5 stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and GP Putnam for this advanced readers copy.
