I tapped in in more of a workout/bodybuilding context, but this had a wider breath of information. Clear explanation of scientific concepts, albeit a bit basic at times. I really got into it in the latter half when we started getting into rare events and studies.

T the GOAT

Overdrive book

I tried to read this book, I really did. First I got to the part where Hooven dismisses all criticism of the Google “women are too anxious to be leaders” guy as emotionally driven. Well, maybe she didn’t have space to point out that misogynist was wrong, I thought. So I kept reading, and got to the chapter on intersex conditions. She mentions having an intersex student—and then immediately goes on about how hearing this student’s story made *her* feel, before eventually returning to the biology.

At this point I was frustrated and a bit leery—even if the editor had said “readers will connect better to your emotions than to your student’s lived experience” surely she could’ve pushed back—so I skipped ahead to the section on transgender people.

I will say I was pleasantly surprised by the respect and regard for people’s experienced gender identity…and then I noticed that, both here and in at least one other section I flipped through, Hooven equates certain facial and bodily characteristics with masculinity—even though some of these traits are more widespread outside the stereotypical white appearance, and in fact are even used to harass and doubt the identity of non-white cis women.

I wish I could recommend this book, because Hooven does clearly know her biology, but it is so damn blinkered.

Disappointing.

I appreciate that there is discussion about intersex and trans identities. I’m not going to say these are particularly good discussions, but they at least exist. Very research heavy, at times maybe a little too heavy (very detailed). A little too dismissive of feminism and related topics, but overall an alright deep dive into how this hormone impacts different sexes

I wish somebody had warned me sooner that in this case T does actually stand for “transphobe.” Hopefully worth reading for the discourse around her Harvard controversy. This woman puts a LOT of stock in the biological basis of gendered behaviors, arguing against a straw man who thinks hormones do nothing? I wish she’d stuck to sparrows and deer, left humans alone.

Well thought-out, comprehensive, and argued with good faith, this book is important in understanding what it is we do know about testosterone, making it clear implicitly there is much more research to do.
