The artwork in this book is wonderful. If you're looking for a book to introduce the Cinco de Mayo celebration, however, this is not the book for you. The Cinco de Mayo celebration simply serves as a background for a a traditional cat and mouse chase. Overall, though, its a cute book and I would use it for a story time about celebrations.

Mouse experiences the sights and sounds of a Cinco de Mayo festival. He knows there’s candy inside that piñata, but will the hungry cat get to him first?

There aren’t very many books for children about Cinco de Mayo, and if one were looking for a book to help explain the holiday to children, this isn’t really one of them. The festivities are just the background for a traditional cat-and-mouse chase. Quite a few Spanish words are used, but there aren’t any explanations or a glossary, making it difficult for those who do not know Spanish to get the full meaning.

This book is cute, however, and I enjoyed the illustrations, which were created with acrylic paint, pastels, and colored pencils on paper. Mouse was more realistic than cartoon-ish, even though he does have very large, blue glasses.

The illustrations complement the descriptions of Cinco de Mayo items and activities: the food, and the music. They help the reader understand what happens at the fiesta. Jeffrey Ebbeler’s illustrations are vivid and full of light, and actually are much better than the text. The illustrations play with perspective; everything is very big and close – the people and surroundings, to emphasize how small Mouse really is and to see the world from his point of view.

Cinco de Mouse-o! might work best as a group read, coupled with a related activity, unless a better book could be found if one wants to teach about the holiday and its importance. Otherwise, I would not recommend this for that purpose. The illustrations are gorgeous to look at, though.
