My son made me read this and I can see why--a delightful story of a man who takes off on a balloon, discovers a mysterious society built around a Restaurant Constitution on Krakatoa, and then gets blown all the way back to the Atlantic Ocean. Written in 1947 but harking back to an even earlier era of explorer tales with mysterious lands filled with gems and other adventures.

One of my favorites. I might still have my copy somewhere....

Update: I checked this out from the library to read a aloud to JP. It didn’t quite hook him in (it starts a bit slow for a 6 yo) but I went ahead with the re-read.

As an adult I recognize some of the now-problematic elements (including a specific reference to Native Americans, although it’s certainly better than other content from the same time) but the story retains its whimsy and I enjoyed it.

fiction, YA lit, balloons, balloonists, Krakatoa, adventure, explosions, fabulous wealth, diamonds, leisure, international cuisine, children

This was a very fun read aloud!

It was fun, but had endless descriptions of inventions. It was interesting enough to finish, but a bit boring.
