Professor Sherman attempts to travel around the world in a hot air balloon. At Krakatau he is forced to land and finds 26 families living on the island and richer than can be b/c there are diamond mines everywhere. Everyone is forced to leave and this book is Professor Sherman's report on his trip. Boring. Couldn't wait for it to end.

Disappointing. I remember having this book read out loud to menu a teacher in grade school. There were some amusing bits, but not nearly as good as I recalled.

An old fashioned, imaginative tale of adventure. This story encourages children to explore their dreams. Imagine landing on an island full of diamonds! What would you do? No matter what advances we make in transportation, I think the wonder of balloon travel will always captivate the imagination.

1948 Newbery Award

This is a pretty fun adventure.

This book, while probably amazing in its time (more than half a century ago) would likely be shunned by most young readers today. Sure, a lot of the technology, ideas, and events described in the book sound fantastic, fun even. However, the narrator is so boring that I could barely stand him. Many other books have withstood the test of time better; this was a disappointment to me, and I won't be recommending it to any children in the near (or even not-so-near) future.

Working my way through my childhood goal of reading all the Newberry award-winning books. I honestly don’t remember if I read this one as a child or not. It seems familiar and I know we owned it. As an adult, I totally relate to the professor’s desire to escape alone on a balloon for a year

When I picked this book off the Newbery(noting the fashionable new cover), I tried to remember if I had read it before. As soon as I saw "Krakatoa" I remembered reading it as a child . . . not specifics about it, but remembered liking it and being totally fascinated with the South Pacific for a phase. As an adult, I appreciate it's very dry sense of humor -- I love the humor/whimsy/wit in the writing style. It seems very modern in some ways -- perhaps this type of "sophistication" was in fashion for a while, went out of style, and is back again? I love the outrageousness of it, of the amazing inventions of the people on the island (especially the beds that could go right through the skylights so that one could sleep under the stars at night. Would make a good read-aloud and also a good choice for those early expert readers.

One of my favorite children's novels. An imaginative, humorous story full of adventure.
