Plan A

Deb Caletti

4.12 AVERAGE

I love Deb Caletti. I gave this 4 stars because it is an important story about choice and reproductive rights. This got repetitive for me and a bit preachy. I understand why since it is written for a young adult audience. I hope many, many people in places where abortion is restricted or banned read this important examination of the issues.

Deb Caletti has another winner on her hands with this book. Ivy has a plan for her life - a plan that does not include a baby. So when she finds out she is pregnant the decision is easy. Only one problem, she lives in Texas where abortions are illegal. It is the end of the school year, and so she decides to go visit her grandmother in Oregon where she will have the procedure done. It is the road trip of a lifetime - seeing the country, and hearing all the secret stories of the women she sees along the way. A story of body autonomy and the secrets and shame women have had to deal with for centuries.

Very sweet and heartfelt. A little more explanation or history lesson than I needed but then, I think many people aren’t aware of all of it.

A poignant coming of age in a world where being a woman is a crime. And it’s not even science fiction, it’s 2022 Texas. And guess what? Women have always and will always have abortions!!

Oh, Deb Caletti. All of your books move me extraordinarily. I have never made it through one without tears, but I also have never made it through one without laughing like a maniac at some point! I now know that the book will start slowly in order to lay the groundwork, but it will eventually barrel along with so much emotion and intensity that I will find myself blissfully unaware of the rest of the world for those beautiful moments. This title is no exception.

I was about 1/4 of the way through this book when I realized that I need to buy my own copy, as my fingers itched to highlight a passage or scribble my thoughts and scream my "YYYEEESSS!!!" onto the pages. This book is almost a treatise...but completely accessible for the YA audience. Ivy makes it REAL and powerful and Lorenzo makes it warm and silly and snuggly. Grandma Lottie and Aunt Betts and Esilde and all of the women make the story more than a story...they make it almost NONfictional with their evidence. I really dig that. The "abortion road trip love story," with all of its stops and the passport? Ugh. So sweet.

As with all of the rest of her titles, I will be recommending the hell outta this one! So so so good.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you to tbrandbeyondtours and the author for my copy!

This topic means a lot to me and I’m so happy to read a book that FINALLY portrays a teen abortion as NOT something she’s not ready for, that’s it’s agonizing, terrible, abhorrent. Our main character is ready, firm, prepared, and doesn’t regret it. This books purpose seeming to show that abortion is more common place than people like to believe. That it has always been here and always SHOULD be. The town turning on her was quite intense and I think more of a metaphor for how quick people are to turn on something they don’t believe in even if it’s to someone who did the best they could. Absolutely amazing read.

Literary. Would be a rich text to study in mid-late high school.

I feel like everyone should read this book. You either are a woman or know a woman. It shows the good, the bad, the ugly. It incorporates both sides of “your choice.” I really wish abortion wasn’t such a touchy topic that people avoid talking about. 1 in 4 women have had an abortion. It needs to be talked about. It’s unreal how many women have personal stories to tell but feel too much shame and are afraid of backlash so they keep it buried deep down.
