"It started young. Madeline McKay's own mother  opined the girl was born already 14 years old because she seemed sexually aware, even as a toddler. And what a beautiful little girl she was, with a perfectly symmetrical face, high cheekbones that seemed carved from calicutta marble, sparkling emerald eyes, vibrant red hair. Young Darlene–she wasn't Madeline yet–was aware of her beauty, precioussly sensual, seductive in a way that made adult women passively hostile and grown men actively uncomfortable. She knew it. She used it with a glorious absence of shame. "

This passage describes the main character's mother.

I didn't sleep properly for 3 days while reading this book. It's so tense. Excellent though, a look at a side of life few know, and the codes & rules if that life.

When all hell breaks loose...

Lesenswert!

The first in a trilogy about a war in 1980's Providence, RI between the Irish and Italian. The characters are distinct and starting to get flushed out, and I really like our flawed main character, Danny Ryan. I can't wait for the next book to come out. Reading this was like watching a movie.

Not something I would usually read, but I was commissioned to read a proof for work, and I was blown away about how this book made me feel. I really enjoyed it; for fans of gangland rivalry, the fact that there is honour among thieves, and those who question whether blood is truly thicker than water.
