The Grapes of Wrath follows the Joad family as they come to terms with the fact that they would have to leave Oklahoma where their home has always been in search of greener pastures in California in a bid to survive the hardship of the Great Depression.
The prose in this book is poetic, persuasive and breathtakingly stunning which in itself is paradoxical considering the ugly, utterly pathetic nature of the themes it explores - exploitation of labor, classism which are the mechanisms that oil the systems of capitalism.
Steinbeck has been quoted to have said that he did his damndest to rip a readers nerves to rags and in my case I can confirm that he succeeded. It was said that he also said he wanted to leave the reader unsatisfied and again,in my case he succeeded.
As the plot progressed, I often thought about the fact that the upheaval of the world of the Joads and many others like them, brought about a lot of changes that none of them could have anticipated. For example, the family’s leadership falling on Ma, instead of Pa and the risk that Tom took, just to see the journey through. Both characters will always be memorable to me.
I couldn’t also help but think that even though the Joads and other families were badly hit, they still had a few rights that probably would have been non-existent if they of a different race.
Without a doubt, Steinbeck left no stone unturned in his storytelling and I appreciated the brief passages in between chapters which often offered a broader perspective of the situation than we could glimpse from the POV of the Joads.

I can’t help but feel that Steinbeck would be disappointed in how relevant this book still is and with how little class solidarity we see right now. In the case of workers like the Joads, this back-breaking work has just shifted to be done by immigrant workers that are exploited and paid little more than what the Joads got almost 100 years ago. But even those who are in the working middle class are still being taken advantage of by big companies that funnel all their wealth upwards.
