As with this author’s previous book, an interesting idea is let down by a marked lack of any character development. I just lost my patience for it this time around.

I pick one word to start my review. For 'Tusks of Extinction', I pick: odd
Merriam-Webster defines 'odd' as: different from the ordinary in a way that causes curiosity or suspicion
It's hard to believe this a little less than 100 pages. It kept me thinking for awhile after I finished. It wasn't at all what I expected: I picked this one up as my sci-fi read (usually one annually). And while science is part of the storyline...it's not really the heart of this story.
The plight of the poached/hunted animals and the mammoth's re-introduction was really emotional and hit hard. The book (not sure if it's truly a book...it's so short), flipped between the animal world and (mostly) the human world. Because it was short, it did leave me feeling like I wished it was a bit longer, but the compact nature of the story was also a benefit.
I like Ray Nayler's writing style...sometimes the tangents were too tangent-y, but I think maybe the point was to try and lull you and then bring you back to the harshness of the animal's reality. It was certainly an interesting read. Not sure how I feel about recommending it, per se, but I liked the way it made me think and speculate so it did the job I think it set out to do.

There is something so cool about being able to fit such an interesting and creative story within a book which is under 100 pages in length. After coming off of like 4 books in a row of heavy exposition, it made this such a nice read. This book was more than just a wild Sci-fi tale, it really caused me to think quite deeply upon the topics and themes it dealt with. I think I would have preferred the story to be maybe 20 pages longer; but that does not detract from my experience with this lil novella.

An interesting and timely, near future novel about "de-extinction." I say timely because I read just the other day that a Dallas based company has made a breakthrough in their quest to create a wooly mammoth-like animal and reintroduce it to it's original habitats. This will make a lasting impression on climate change, in a good way, and is, honestly, just awesome. I completely disregard the protestations of the naysayers and doubters and hope this happens sooner than later.

Excellent concepts and very important information about elephant poaching. Although I could not for the life of me care for any character, except Damira ofc
