The fact that Akira goes back to his old slave-working-self when he encounters his former boss is just a weird turn of events. It is another form of zombie-ism, one can say, which is clever to convey in this setting. On its own, it just feels out of place, but since it was, in a way, a manner of eliciting Shizuka's backstory, it sort of made sense.
