I read it for school, I get it, but not always loved by me and wow is there some racist and misogynist vibes. I know we take time into account, and I’ve heard Mr King has grown, but this is a period piece if ever there was one.

giving some leeway because this is his first book, but it was just. so many slurs and so much racism/homophobia/in old physical copies he literally says the n slur/he describes a r*pe scene?? not okay. i liked the way it was formatted but that’s about it. OH YEAH AND THEY DESCRIBE KILLING ANIMALS?? BOOOO

Absolutely riveting, had that "couldn't put it down" quality. I've never come across a piece of horror that's as heart-breaking as it is frightening. It's a classic for a reason. 

Not without its flaws though. Some of the article clippings didn't feel necessary. There are also some lines that understandably haven't aged well, especially King's frequent need to comment on the size, shape and coloration of the female characters' chests. (I'll admit there times when it plot relevant, but still kinda weird to read)

This is my first Stephen King book, but it won't be my last. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to start out in his work or horror in general.

This was a re-listen for my Stephen King book club meeting in January 2025. I enjoyed the 50th anniversary introduction by Margaret Atwood immensely.

Read this with my partner for Halloween 🎃 First Stephen King book! Glad I got to finally read this classic horror novel. I enjoyed the different perspectives and article clippings in the novel and chilling writing. However, found the sexist and fatphobic descriptions of characters and racist language frustrating to read.
