A booktuber recommended this as one of her 5-star reads in a yearly wrap-up and I thought, "eh, what the hell, let's see what it's like." And...whoa boy.
An incredible account of a moment in history that defied all of the odds.
The way this was retold, the pacing and staging for the events that happened, were done with such care to tell the story right that quite often I forgot that this wasn't a work of fiction.
Because how could these men have survived what they did? And yet.
I described to a friend that reading this book felt, at times, like I was watching a movie. I was so emotionally invested at times and so deep in following the visual descriptions of what was happening that I often lost hours to this book.
Cannot recommend this book enough, and I'm so glad I gave it a shot.

Incredible book. Could not put it down. The matter-of-fact writing style really keeps the tension going.

I picked up this book in response to two reading prompts:
1) Read a book outside your comfort zone
2) Read a book set in the Antarctic
Normally I am not one for history or survival books (which I'm sure affected my rating of this book).
I enjoyed the writing style which flowed naturally. My favorite parts of the books were the author's descriptions of the locations and environment. The audiobook narrator did a fantastic job with all the different voices and accents.
I found it difficult to read the challenges the crew faced in this harsh environment, but I thought the author did a good job of describing the harsh realities in a clear and direct manner. An impressive balance was created between the struggles of the people with the majesty of the Antarctic.
Overall, I am glad I read this book and would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy History, Adventure, Over-Coming Obstacles, and Survival.
