Maria Doria Russell is a wonderful writer and the story of “Big Annie” Clements is an important story of people fighting for workers' rights that needs to be told and told again. I loved the recurring references to the 'price' of copper in terms of life and limb, and the story of Eve’s coming of age politically, but really ‘The Women of Copper Country' didn’t work for me as a novel. I guess when you are telling someone real’s story, you are reluctant to ascribe deeper inner thoughts and feelings to that person , and so respectfully move towards description through actions or words, and it struck me that I didn’t really get the inner Annie, something that’s really important in the story for me. The emotional aspects only really came from the truly 'fictional' characters. It is a good story and worth reading for what it is, but I was a little disappointed.

It was serendipity that I read this book over Labor Day weekend. I enjoyed learning about the role women played in the labor movement in the early 20th century and this book presented an accurate picture of what went on at that time, however, the book seemed light on the fiction part of historical fiction. What I mean is that the characters were presented from a distance, like reading a history book. I never felt a connection to them and I couldn't get a sense of what they were thinking or feeling. It was worth reading for the history.

I didn't know this story was based on real events until the end when you hear all about the real people on whom this fictionalized story was based. The events are so incredible, you wish it were all fiction, but a beautifully told story.
