So So good. would recommend to anyone who isn’t too triggered by violence or suicide. This book is so important. People like these characters are still struggling today, now that the taliban have come back into power. This story may not be real but there are real people struggling in this way all over. please please read this book.

this book moved and devasted me.

some things i didn't like: whilst the book starts with Mariam's story, a large part of the book focuses on Laila, and I wish we had more of Mariam, and more of Mariam and Laila together. I also felt Laila was a more developed character, this might have been because we spent more time with her, even when she wasn't narrating and her character's actions are described in a scene I felt them to be true to Laila. I couldn't feel the same for Mariam, I felt the depths of her character were not as explored especially in her adult life

However, the book was beautifully written, and I 'enjoyed' the themes of love loss and devastation of war. I really like books with long/life timelines (I felt this book was better done than Panchinko!) I feel devasted by this book - will continue to read from this author, and seek out more books on Afghanistan.
