A hard, lovely book with lots of science interwoven, and very little love. The main character's trauma coping is centerstage in a way we rarely get to see so intimately.

Conceptually this is right up my alley, so I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately I found the first person POV hard to get behind, and felt like a lot of the difficult themes that were introduced didn't get the time/depth they deserved.

The back end of the book sagged quite a bit for me especially. There wasn't enough character development to temper how roundabout the plot ended up being. The ending was too clumsily executed for me to feel... particularly moved/gutted by the cycle of abuse that ended up being perpetuated by the protag.

Maybe I'd feel differently on a re-read but overall I just... wanted more from it.

I couldn't put this down. It's a tense thriller and a portrait of the ways we are shaped by trauma. There is one major plot hole that seems glossed over, but I didn't really care that it wasn't realistic. Loved it.

This was so gripping! I can’t tell if I actually liked any of the characters by the end but I absolutely could not put this book down

This is a perfect read for spooky season. It is unnerving in the same way as a black mirror episode, but if you were way more invested in the characters and their decisions. It's a blend of sci-fi and thriller, without diving too deep into either genre. Instead, it stays rooted in a really interesting discussion of the malleability of self and who you are in the context of a relationship. The writing style felt very similar to Gailey's other book, Magic for Liars, so I would say if you liked that one, you will probably like this one as well. However, this one felt better paced to me and is definitely more thriller than mystery.
