A counting book that covers numbers 1-10 using African animals and teaches readers the Swahilinames for the numbers. Rhyming text and watercolor illustrations make this a great read aloud.
Back matter includes information on the animals featured in the story, a section about the Maasai people of Tanzania, pronunciation guides and background information on Swahili names, facts about tanzania, a map of the country, and a review of the numbers 1-10 and a pronunciation guide.
A great mulit-cultural read and one that really makes the reader feel as though they've traveled to a distant land. Highly recommended for PreK-2.

Cute rhymes and a nice introduction to counting and Tanzanian animals.
Fantastic book for practicing counting. But, this also became a fantastic introduction to Tanzania for my tinies. Not that they can point to it on the world mp yet, they are 3.5, but we certainly took this opportunity to talk the country, the Masai tribe and their way of living. We didn't have to even reach the last pages, where there was the information about Tanzania. At the first page itself, the tinies stopped me and asked me what the family in the picture was dressed differently than us on an outing. I am not sure how much will they remember, but I truly enjoyed talking to them and I hope they got what I was trying to convey.
A HUGE hit. Hard to find books about African animals that are set in African places/with African people, so that’s a big win. Not fubu / #ownvoices

I have had a lot of success with this book at Toddler programs. Now I have found a Swahili Counting Song on Literacy in Motion and Ella Jenkins' Going on Safari to use with it.
Used for Celebrate Africa Story Time and Black History class visit. 2/7/14
A girl chose this at PJ Story Time and we counted with Ella and did 'Going on Safari' on her Jambo CD. 2/23/15
Used for my African Story Time since I had a bunch of toddlers. One girl liked repeating the African numbers. 2/23/16
Mostly babies at Baby/Toddler now - will need to check out more board books... Also need to remember to check out pronunciations before reading...

We All Went On Safari: A Counting Journey Through Tanzania by Laurie Krebs (2004)
This unique counting book incorporates both English and Swahili words for numbers, and the backmatter includes information about Tanzania and about the meaning and pronunciation of the children's names.
2023 update: I read this for my jungle-themed storytime today, and it was great! The text is simple enough for a wide age range, the kids liked calling out the animals they saw, and the adults appeared to appreciate the cultural representation with names and numbers in Swahili.
