i can see why ilona andrews are considered two of the greats in urban fantasy - and this book isn't the best i've ever read. it was strong for a first book in an urban fantasy series, although it was extremely info-dumpy at times. the pace lagged quite often, meaning the last third was jam packed with action but the villain reveal was pretty underwhelming. magic bite's saving grace is that the worldbuilding is detailed, immaculate and so, so, so intriguing. along with fantasy, andrews incorporate horror and sci-fi elements seamlessly.

to say it plainly: kate daniels in a bad b*tch! i love her narration, her perspective and especially her one-liners. she's intelligent but still has her blind spots, and her mouth gets her into a lot of trouble. the side characters are just as vivid as our bada$$ heroine. curran is an a$$hole, yet i can't wait to see how he becomes a worthy partner for kate. i love slow burns; i'm already invested in this one. my only other point of criticism is that like many other female-led fantasy novels, kate appears to be lacking in female friendships other than her few correspondences with anna.

the world of kate daniels series in over 10 books long, so i don't doubt there will be ample opportunity for said relationships to develop. this is me, preparing for the long and entertaining ride ahead!

I've found that I really love urban fantasy, and Magic Bites is no different. It's gripping and it made me want to pick up book two immediately after I put it down. Kate is an interesting protagonist. Having a mystery about her parentage and the strength of her magic hinted at but not quite explained left me wanting more. The world building is extensively, but not excessively explained. We're shown how things work throughout the course of the novel. Curran and the pack are interesting. Kate's issues with authority combined with current position of authority make them curious allies. They work well together, though. The end to this novel was satisfying, but I'm excited to read the next one.

This slapped! But they need better cover art!
I never would've picked this up, if not for a recommendation.

But the dialogue is witty, the characters are interesting. The lead is funny and bad ass, without being overly clichéd or stereotyped. And Curran... 😩

The mystery wrapped up pretty quickly, but it was well paced and very intriguing. The writing was succinct, but descriptive and engaging. Its a long series too, so I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

It's also so refreshing for a main character to not be described as beautiful without knowing it, or a humble bombshell. The way Kate talks about herself is aligned with her character - her body's function is important, rather than form. The writers aren't trying to convince us she's a stunner, she's just a woman.

I'd recommend this!

It would have been a 3.5, but there's an offhanded comment about inhuman creatures looking like concentration camp victims, and that really stuck with me. I'm hoping this was a one time mistake on behalf of the authors.
