A few days ago when I first went looking for children's audiobooks, I was just hoping to have someone speak gently and simply to me in this time of great distress. Something familliar, calming, and easy to deal with. Now, if you ask me, Mark Levengood is one of the most soothing narrators in the world, and I've always loved the Moomins, so finding out that he'd narrated 17 different Moomin books was wonderful. What I didn't expect was being swept along for riveting adventures far beyond Moomin Valley, meeting an almost entirely new cast of characters (The Hemul's Aunt alone is worth the read), and realising I only know a fraction of the Moomin lore. These books have all the wonder and delight a children's book, while also having more emotional depth than most books aimed at adults. I can't believe I haven't read them before.

There's something very amusing about this book being from Moominpapa's POV since he things so very highly of himself. The story was cute, but the characters are always more the star of the show in these works. I loved the ghost and even grew endeared to the Muddler. The ending was very hopeful and left me in a pleasant mood. This whole book left me in a pleasant mood every time I read it, it's very good for you to find books like it overall.

A happier and more storybook ending than most other Moomin books, but Jansson still couldn't write a bad word.
