aaaaaaa barndom

I'm glad I read this now because I don't think I was able to fully appreciate this book's magic as a child. I adored it and all those weird little creatures that joined Moominpappa on his journey to becoming Moominpappa.

Tove Jansson has the ability to make you laugh, think, and feel things with a few words. And I apologise for being sappy, but this is on my nostalgia shelf for a reason.

A series of vignettes. Not as well developed as the other Moomin books.

aaaaaaa barndom

The Moomin books are all quite odd, but this was the oddest so far. Perhaps it was just because the narrative style is different than the others, but there's other things: for example, one chapter ends like this:

"'Nibling,' I said to end this surprising conversation, 'what'll your mother say when she finds that you've run away?'

'She'll cry, I believe,' said the Nibling."

And that's it. That's the end of the chapter. It's so surreal, sometimes I felt like I was reading it in a dream. That being said, I really enjoyed this book and the ghost is now one of my top favourite characters in literature.

Of all the Moomin books I've read, this is my least favourite. It's not a bad book, it just doesn't have the same charm the others do. Maybe it's because I've always been fond of the younger characters reading about Moominpappa wasn't that interesting to me. Yes, there are some amazing adventures in this book and the way it explains the families and relationships of the characters is hands down the best part of the story. However, young Moominpappa as a character is at times annoying, having such a high opinion of himself. I think the biggest thing to take out of this book is to dare to dream and go on adventures and have fun - which, given I read it during one of the best trips abroad I've had, is very appropriate.
